Changping subway line reopened after Thursday's collision

The Changping subway line in Beijing resumed operations on Saturday after a rear-end collision took place on Thursday evening and the city will conduct a comprehensive inspection of potential safety hazards,

with particular attention to risks arising from accumulated snow, icy conditions and strong winds.

Beijing is now bracing itself for a cold wave, strong winds and a persistent drop in temperature following the recent snowfall. A city governmental meeting was held on Friday to discuss the city's response to the extreme weather conditions.

Yin Li, Party secretary of Beijing, underscored the importance of addressing the aftermath of the Changping subway incident.

He emphasized the need to prioritize the comprehensive treatment of the injured, conduct a rigorous investigation into the accident's causes, conduct an in-depth analysis of the situation, propose specific measures, and ensure the swift rectification of identified issues.

"A comprehensive inspection of potential safety hazards is set to be undertaken. The authorities will monitor and timely remove the snow from the roofs of large structures such as sports venues, agricultural greenhouses, temporary constructions, and dilapidated buildings to prevent any potential collapses," said Yin at the meeting.

Measures will be taken to prepare for strong winds, and intensified inspections will be conducted on outdoor advertisements, signboards, traffic signs, air conditioning units, and large equipment at construction sites to address any potential risks and prevent accidents.

A subway train on the Changping line crashed into another that had made an emergency stop at around 7 pm on Thursday, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport on Friday.

All rescue and evacuation work was completed by 11 pm on Thursday.
