The dance theater production of "See," starring Tang Shiyi, one of China's most celebrated dancers, transcended the conventional boundaries of dance to offer a poignant reflection on life, nature and the human spirit. This performance coincided with the digital release of the production's original soundtrack by Universal Music China and on physical vinyl by HYM-Original, a Chinese vinyl record label, turntable producer and partner of Universal Music China.

Developed by the Hohhot Culture and Tourism Investment Group and under the artistic direction of Feng Shuangbai, president of the Chinese Dancers Association, "See" is a testament to the power of creativity through collaboration. With its premiere in February 2023, "See" channels the artistic dexterity of Tang Shiyi, the main dancer of the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater, and the young director Zheng Zihao, who undertook the role of general director for this production. "See" draws its inspiration from the vast landscapes and cultural richness of Hohhot, the capital of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, aiming to bridge regional divides and present a narrative that resonates on a global scale.

The performance is structured into three chapters: "Poetically Dwelling," "Life Moving Forward" and "Looking Back in Time." Each segment explores different facets of existence, employing modern dance techniques and visual storytelling to engage the audience in a dialogue about the human condition. The production's innovative approach to dance, which combines traditional elements with contemporary expression, has been praised for its ability to evoke deep emotional responses, captivating audiences across the nation.

"The three chapters stem from our deep feelings, extensive exploration and thoughtful contemplation," shared Tang Shiyi. From the intimate bond between humans and nature to the relentless pursuit of personal growth, "See" invites the audience to reflect on their own lives and the world around them.

Integral to the production's impact is its original soundtrack which was composed by pianist Xue Tingzhe. A departure from his previous works, Xue's compositions for "See" are meticulously crafted to complement the narrative's emotional depth and thematic exploration. The collaboration with FAME'S Macedonian Symphonic Orchestra and top soloists from around the world has added a rich and truly international soundscape to the performance by blending Mongolian long tunes, ethnic music and instruments like the Morin Khuur, horsehead fiddle.

As a representative of neo-classical music for the new generation, Xue's approach to the soundtrack was driven by a desire to blend the abstract with the tangible. "Although 'See' showcases abstract conceptual expression, I tried as hard as possible to infuse the drama with vivid imagery and rich imagination through music," he explained. The result is a soundtrack that not only enhances the visual experience but also stands alone as an impressive work of art in its own right, evoking strong emotional resonance in the audience.

As the curtains descended, Xue, Tang and the other performers emerged to take a bow, expressing gratitude to the audience amidst a sea of applause and cheers. Outside, eager fans formed queues to purchase the newly released vinyl record. "Our dance may come to an end but its essence remains infinite; all you think is... all as you 'See'," Tang said.
